A court decision on the fate of foreign law firms with liaison offices in India may still be some months away. The case, which was reported in the December/January issue of India Business Law Journal, came up for what was supposed to have been the final hearing in Bombay High Court in late January. It was adjourned.
The dispute dates back to the mid-1990s when licences to open liaison offices were granted to three foreign law firms, Ashurst, Chadbourne & Parke and White & Case. Pressure group Lawyers Collective challenged the licences in court, arguing that the Legal Advocates Act, 1961, prohibits any foreign lawyer from practising in India.
