The Indian government has announced it will restrict the purchase of telecoms equipment from Chinese dealers.

The controversial move, which the government says has been made for national security reasons, sparked outrage in Beijing and anxiety among Indian mobile operators, who rely heavily on Chinese equipment to meet India’s growing demand for telecommunications.

Industry experts say the ban will drastically cut profits for Chinese telecom companies Huawei and ZTE, both of which had planned significant moves into the Indian market. The restrictions also spell bad news for Indian mobile operators who have purchased low-cost telecom equipment from Chinese suppliers in the past.
