The global financial crisis has prompted a wave of consolidation in legal markets, with law firms strengthening their presence by formalizing associations, affiliations and tie-ups. The latest high-profile tie-up involves Australian law firm Deacons and UK-based Norton Rose.
The new international legal practice, to be called Norton Rose Group, will come into being on 1 January. Norton Rose Group will be led by group chief executive Peter Martyr, the current Norton Rose chief executive, and deputy group chief executive Don Boyd, the current Deacons Australia chief executive partner.
The new group will have a turnover of more than £420 million (US$689 million) and over 1,800 fee earners in 29 offices worldwide. In the Asia-Pacific region it will bring together more than 700 professionals operating from offices in Bangkok, Beijing, Brisbane, Canberra, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Melbourne, Perth, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo.
