US law firm Covington & Burling announced in February that Timothy Stratford, who previously served as assistant United States trade representative for China affairs, has joined the firm as a partner. He will be resident in the firm’s Beijing office and will practise in its international trade and finance group. The firm says Mr Stratford will be the most senior former US trade official to join the US business community in China.
Stratford has lived and worked professionally in China for more than 25 years, and is fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese. During his tenure as trade representative, he worked closely with senior government officials in the US and China in developing and implementing US-China trade policy, and addressing problems encountered by companies engaged in bilateral trade and investment. Before his appointment as trade representative, Mr Stratford served as general counsel for the China operations of General Motors. He also previously served as minister-counsellor for commercial affairs at the US embassy in
Beijing, and as chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.
