Tata aims high with helicopter deal

UK-based helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tata Sons to form an Indian joint venture company that will assemble one of its models, the AW119. The MOU was signed at the Aero India air show on 12 February.

Helicopter_(AugustaWestland_AW119)The joint-venture company will assemble, complete and deliver the helicopters worldwide, while AgustaWestland will retain the sales and marketing functions. It is expected that the first finished units will roll off the assembly line in 2011.

“Establishing an AW119 final assembly line in India will allow us to meet the growing demand in the world market for a modern single engine helicopter and to further expand our presence in India where we see strong future business opportunities,” AgustaWestland CEO Giuseppe Orsi said on the occasion of the launch.
