Shearman & Sterling has hired Ong Kok Jin as a counsel in its global M&A practice in Singapore. Ong joined from Herbert Smith Freehills where he was a senior associate for almost three years in Singapore.

Ong specialises in energy and infrastructure M&A in Asia Pacific with a particular focus on renewables, power transactions and joint ventures. He is experienced in a wide variety of sectors and involved in the full lifespan of a deal, from due diligence to disputes, in addition to his track record in oil and gas and infrastructure transactions.

Phil Cheveley, London-based Shearman & Sterling’s head of M&A in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Asia, said the firm planned to grow its offering In the region and beyond.

“Jin’s appointment reflects our commitment to deepening our M&A capability in Singapore and Southeast Asia,” said Cheveley.

Ong’s appointment followed the arrival of Singapore-based energy expert David Clinch, who joined Shearmen & Sterling as a partner in June last year from Herbert Smith Freehills after more than 27 years partnership. Ong and Clinch worked together extensively in the previous firm.
