Dalit man assaulted

In a case that has shocked India’s legal community, a group of lawyers have been accused of beating up a young Dalit man outside the Agra civil court.

Police reports allege that the lawyers tied 22-year-old Vinod Kumar to a tree, tortured him and took turns beating him up after he threatened a fellow lawyer.

Kumar had come to the court to sort out a dispute with a relative, Ravinder Singh, who is a lawyer in the Agra court. After a heated exchange, the duo reportedly exchanged blows, the Hindustan Times reported. Soon, other lawyers joined the fight.

The local lawyers’ association set up a five-member committee to investigate the incident and submitted a report to the Collectorate Bar Council. The report was then sent to the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council.
