A one-year Postgraduate Diploma on Arbitration and Mediation course has been launched at Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) Mumbai backed by the General Counsels’ Association of India.

The faculty collaboration follows an MoU signed between the university and the association in late 2021.

The course will familiarise participants with the fundamentals of arbitration and mediation as a dispute resolution mechanism and provide insight into functions and challenges encountered in using dispute resolution tools. The programme started in April 2022 and runs to March 2023.

“The GCAI supports [the university’s] programme by bringing in the expertise of the corporate sector, which will provide an enriching learning experience,” said CV Raghu, founder member of the General Counsels’ Association of India (GCAI) and group general counsel of the Samvardhana Motherson Group.

Chirag Balyan, an assistant professor of law and public information officer at MNLU Mumbai, added that in future all programme participants will have the opportunity to be empanelled arbitrators or mediators with MNLU Centre for Arbitration and Research.

“This postgraduate diploma is a step forward in the efforts of the GCAI and MNLU Mumbai to set up a centre for resolving disputes through arbitration and mediation,” said Balyan. “This industry-academia collaboration to foster alternative dispute resolution will start a new era of legal education in the country.”
