International law firm Vinson & Elkins has announced that veteran energy and projects partner Gary Kotara will relocate to Hong Kong as part of a bid by the firm to strengthen its Asia practice. Prior to his new appointment, Kotara was based in Vinson & Elkins’ Dubai office, where he was co-managing partner of the firm’s UAE practice.
Widely acclaimed as a leading lawyer for his natural resource and energy work, Kotara has been involved in major energy projects in countries across Asia, including India. “The entire landscape of the energy industry in India will change this year as the Reliance/Niko KG deepwater block comes on stream,” Kotara told India Business Law Journal. “Indian energy imports will drop significantly. Indian industry should become more competitive, and the environment will benefit.
“I plan to continue my active involvement on projects in the Indian energy sector from Hong Kong,” Kotara added.
