Lalit Bhasin, the president of the Society of Indian Law Firms, has been appointed as the chairperson of the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT). He will serve in the role for a period of three years.
Based in New Delhi, FCAT hears appeals against any orders passed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which is the country’s censor board. Every film must certified by the CBFC in order to be exhibited publicly.
Those eligible for appointment as chairperson are either retired high court judges or individuals qualified to be a high court judge. In addition to Bhasin, the tribunal comprises two other members – Deepa Dixit and Gurjit Singh Behl.
