As reported in China Business Law Journal last month (see volume 2 issue 8, page 12), English law firms Clyde & Co and Barlow Lyde & Gilbert have embarked on a merger which they aim to complete by 1 November. Recent announcements suggest that the planned merger has not got in the way of partnership appointments at either firm.
Clyde & Co announced in September that Gilbert Kwok has joined the firm’s Asia construction practice in Hong Kong as a partner. Previously a partner at Stephenson Harwood, Kwok’s practice covers both contentious and non-contentious matters relating to the construction industry. He has advised Hong Kong developers on projects throughout China and Asia, and has assisted Hong Kong and international real estate developers and contractors in relation to the legal aspects of infrastructure, commercial, hotel, casino, industrial and factory developments in the region.
Kwok intends to focus on Chinese and other Asian contractors which are engaged in an increasing number of overseas projects. In addition to being a lawyer he is a qualified quantity surveyor, and is currently chairman of the Hong Kong dispute resolution professional group committee of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
