After nine years at the firm, Deacons’ partner and head of tax and trusts, Stefano Mariani, joined Baker McKenzie as a tax disputes counsel in Hong Kong.
Mariani advises on contentious tax matters, including corporate taxation, group reconstructions, personal taxation, stamp duty and property taxes. As a tax litigator, he advises on all aspects of Hong Kong and international tax law, with a particular focus on dispute resolution.
Apart from being a solicitor advocate in Hong Kong, Mariani is also a barrister in England and Wales. He is experienced in cross-border tax planning and double taxation treaties.
Brendan Kelly, Baker McKenzie’s chair of the Asia-Pacific tax practice in Shanghai, said tax is the firm’s leading strategic area of practice.
“With the pressure to generate collections, governments will continue to target multinational corporations as a source for revenue generation,” said Kelly. “We expect to see a continuation of the recent trend of a major uptick in audits and controversy across the region.”
