Freddy Karyadi has over two decades of practising law in Indonesia, and has been heavily involved in numerous complex cross-border deals including lending fintech, tax, restructuring, distressed assets, M&A, investment, employment and dispute settlement/bankruptcy.
Freddy was one of the pioneers who focused on the digital industry, and has handled many transactions involving technology and fintech/health-tech/edu-tech/media/TMT companies, from early stage fund raising, integration, exit and public offering preparation to regulatory compliance. Freddy has represented independent power producers, giant ECAs and commercial banks for various electricity sector financing. Freddy’s clients vary from multinationals to start-ups, spanning a wide range of industries including natural resources, energy, financial institutions (including multifinance, P2P, insurance, brokerage, and banks) private equity-venture capital, and property. With a strong knowledge of legal, commercial, tax and accounting issues that these industries encounter, Freddy can quickly identify the key issues and offer practical business-oriented legal solutions.
On litigation matters, Freddy handled various suspensions of payment and bankruptcy proceedings of various industries including the aviation, shipping and mining sectors, and also assisted clients in tax disputes.
Freddy has been consistently rated as a leading lawyer by several international publications including Asialaw, Legal 500, Asia Business Law Journal and IFLR1000 for the past half decade.
He is a member of the editorial board of the Derivatives and Financial Instrument Journal of the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentations. He contributes numerous legal and tax articles to IFLR, International Tax Review, Thomson Reuters, International Comparative Legal Guide and Getting the Deal Through. Freddy was also a speaker at IBA, IPBA, IFA and IFLR events, and gave seminars for tech start-up communities.
His professional membership includes Indonesian Capital Market Legal Consultant, Indonesian Tax Consultant, International Fiscal Association, International Federation of Accountant. He is fluent in English and Bahasa.
Freddy read law at the University of Indonesia (1998) and earned an LLM international tax from Leiden University (2002). He also graduated cum laude in 1997 from the faculty of economics of Trisakti University in Jakarta, holds an MBA degree from Peking University (2015), and is a licensed tax consultant and a chartered accountant. In 2010, he was seconded to a leading Dutch law and tax firm.
