“We have been waiting for five years to find the right team and the right time to enter the Shanghai market,” Wang Qingyou, the director and founding partner of Anli, told China Business Law Journal. While other Chinese firms have been rushing to open branches in Shanghai, Anli waited nearly 20 years since its establishment to foray into this market. Wang said the firm was looking for lawyers who shared its values and goals before it opened an office in the financial capital.
For the time being, the Shanghai office will focus on Japan-related matters and the financial services sector. Chen Yifan, the director of the firm’s Shanghai office, is a registered foreign lawyer in Japan, and city-based partner Nie Ming was previously the vice president of Japan-based Mizuho Bank in China.
